I don't think I have been to...Thanks for the info. I don't think I have been to that website (although I may have...I have been everywhere!)

The countertop is a really tough one, especially here in the midwest. I found one concrete integrated sink, but it's quite a lot of $$ just to ship it here.

We just found out today that Kohler is selling a cast iron integrated sink. I would guess that the iron is at least partly recycled (perhaps an old car?) and when the sink is really really old, it can be recycled again. I plan to find out what the coating is. This maybe a good somewhat green compromise.

One countertop that *maybe* softer (for the sake of your dishes) is Cambria. This is one we are considering. It is 93% USA-mined quartz pieces (I am guessing it is pieces made from unusable quartz) held together by a resin. I am trying to find out what this resin is- I am guessing it is not 'green'. But, it is only 7% as opposed to 100%, like the corian type tops.

I am finding that doing a green remodel is not so easy as selecting everything off a shelf, and that not all of your goals can be achieved. We will definitely have to compromise on some aspects, but we will surely be greener than we would be if we had not made any efforts.Anita Khttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17454018722125173156noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1419877348037585749.post-34411922779784846352008-10-20T08:56:00.000-05:002008-10-20T08:56:00.000-05:00Hi Anita.I am curious as to what you decide for co...Hi Anita.

I am curious as to what you decide for counter/vanity tops. There are the paper ones: Paperstone, Richlite, but I don't know how they are manufactured. Have you found http://www.greenhomeguide.com? They have a great section on countertops.

We are doing a kitchen remodel now and after a lot of discussion decided on an acrylic (e.g. Corian knockoff). Too many broken dishes on our tile counters to consider tile/glass/granite/concrete or anything hard. A bathroom might not have that problem.

Good luck on the remodel!Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00813213766322690541noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1419877348037585749.post-61490326491133196082008-10-14T10:11:00.000-05:002008-10-14T10:11:00.000-05:00Hi Anita,I saw this toilet/sink combo at a restaur...Hi Anita,
I saw this toilet/sink combo at a restaurant in town and thought of you:

http://www.sinkpositive.com/?gclid=CI6DktP_ppYCFQNfFQodbQxz5w

I don't know if the water in St Louis would be too cold, but in Florida it works great!

PatchiPatchihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09097638657085263738noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1419877348037585749.post-25605851759684606762008-09-25T12:17:00.000-05:002008-09-25T12:17:00.000-05:00Thanks for the info Beth- I also think I can recyc...Thanks for the info Beth- I also think I can recycle this at a grocery store with their plastic bags- but I'll check first!Anita Khttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17454018722125173156noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1419877348037585749.post-18283909522317466752008-09-25T11:59:00.000-05:002008-09-25T11:59:00.000-05:00Hi Anita. Before throwing that plastic cover into your recycle bin, please check with your community and make sure it actually belongs in there!

Companies love to put recycling symbols on things that theoretically could be recycled somewhere. It's greenwashing. It all depends on what your community recycling program will allow.

Generally, it's not a good idea to toss loose plastic bags into recycle bins because they wreak havoc with the sorting machines. I wrote a post revealing many of the myths of recycling here:

http://www.fakeplasticfish.com/2007/09/wait-are-you-sure-thats-recyclable.html

BethAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1419877348037585749.post-49657408850729302122008-09-08T10:51:00.000-05:002008-09-08T10:51:00.000-05:00Here is a method for brewing ice tea in the fridge...Here is a method for brewing ice tea in the fridge, no heating required:

http://www.uptontea.com/shopcart/information/INFOicedTea_coldWaterMethod.aspPatchihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09097638657085263738noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1419877348037585749.post-990263027593670382008-09-04T15:37:00.000-05:002008-09-04T15:37:00.000-05:00When we had our kitchen remodeled we put in a Moen...When we had our kitchen remodeled we put in a Moen faucet that has a filtering system. We have the Britta pitcher right now, but with 3 of us drinking lots of water in the summer, it's not always convenient to wait for it to drain through!

I remember reading a detox book, and the author suggested putting filters in the shower as well! The "old" stuff we have is so much nicer than what we see in stores...

Most of our furniture was either inherited from my husband's grandparents or bought at antique stores and estate sales. Most of the time they were ready to use. Some pieces needed refinishing, which was not hard to do. Our dining room table and chairs are new, but only because we couldn't find a used one that would accomodate the "intimate family" of 15 when we cook for the holidays.

Another great way to recycle furniture is to reapolster them when they start looking shabby. You can do it yourself (if you are handy) or have it done professionaly. I'm sad everytime I think that we won't have our couch for much longer. It is starting to fall apart, but it has been reapolstered so many times it can't take any new staples.
